Medicare Part D Will Cover Wegovy Starting July 1, 2026 — Are You Eligible?

Starting July 1, 2026, Medicare Part D — and Medicare Advantage plans with Part D benefits — will cover Wegovy® specifically for chronic weight management for the first time. Previously, Medicare covered Wegovy® only for cardiovascular risk reduction. This expansion means millions of additional beneficiaries may now qualify for GLP-1 weight loss coverage at just $50 per month.

What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program is a new federal coverage expansion that takes effect July 1, 2026. Under this program, Medicare Part D plans are required to cover Wegovy® (semaglutide 2.4mg) for eligible beneficiaries at a capped cost of $50 per month.

This is a historic shift. Previously Medicare explicitly excluded weight loss medications from coverage. The GLP-1 Bridge Program changes that permanently.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for Medicare GLP-1 coverage you must meet ALL of the following:

✅ Enrolled in Medicare Part D OR Medicare Advantage plan with Part D benefits
✅ BMI of 30 or higher — OR BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
✅ Prescription from a licensed healthcare provider confirming medical necessity
✅ No prior exclusions for GLP-1 medications under your specific plan

Important: Coverage details may vary by individual Medicare Part D plan. Always verify with your specific plan before assuming coverage.

How Much Will It Cost?

Under the GLP-1 Bridge Program, eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries pay a maximum of $50 per month for Wegovy®. Without insurance, Wegovy® typically costs $1,300-$1,600 per month at retail pharmacies.

This represents a savings of over $1,200 per month for eligible patients.

What Is Wegovy®?

Wegovy® is an FDA-approved once-weekly injectable medication containing semaglutide 2.4mg — the same active ingredient as Ozempic® but at a higher dose specifically approved for chronic weight management.

In clinical trials, patients using Wegovy® lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks when combined with diet and lifestyle changes.

Wegovy® is manufactured by Novo Nordisk A/S. FormaRx is not affiliated with or endorsed by Novo Nordisk A/S.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicare cover Ozempic® for weight loss?

Ozempic® is approved for type 2 diabetes management, not weight loss. Medicare covers Ozempic® under Part D for diabetes patients. For weight loss specifically, Wegovy® is the FDA-approved option now covered under the GLP-1 Bridge Program.

Does Medicare cover compounded semaglutide?

No. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program covers FDA-approved Wegovy® only — not compounded semaglutide from telehealth platforms. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved as finished drug products and are not covered by Medicare.

When exactly does coverage start?

July 1, 2026. Coverage does not apply retroactively to prescriptions filled before this date.

What if my Part D plan doesn't cover Wegovy®?

You may be able to request a formulary exception from your plan. Alternatively, self-pay telehealth programs starting from $49 are available through our network.

Bottom Line

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program is one of the most significant expansions of Medicare coverage in years. If you're eligible, this could mean accessing Wegovy® for just $50 per month starting July 1, 2026.
